Today, whilst meandering down my local high street I was horrified to see that the corporate chain stores have invaded!!
Yes, Costa have invaded my local High Street, relentless on its quest to caffeinate the nation, as I walked by I saw its packed interior, and I shed a silent tear!
It's not that Costa is so bad! But it signals the homogenising of our High Streets, till they are sterile interchangeable places, stripped of individuality, with no personality, identikit from Darlington to Dartmouth, and yet I know people will flock glad to know they have what everyone else has and their not missing out!!
Yet I mourn for the dusty shoe shop that was once there, with its expensive, staid, classic shoes and a look reminiscent of Are you being served, and I fear that the high street that was once the slightly scuzzy girl who had a sense of humour and a vintage wardrobe full of surprises, has grown into the organised grown up who shops at Marks's, wears Court Shoes, drinks chardonnay and works in an office! and I miss who she once was
